Though physically he is not anymore with us, his songs, movies, mannerisms, and antics still keep him alive. Even today, singers turn to him for inspiration and look up to him for his gifts to the Indian Film Industry. And today on his birthday, as his ardent fan, I dedicate this post to great Kishore Kumar, whose voice still lives on – in his fans’ hearts reverberating through the entire industry.

Born as Abhas Kumar Ganguly on 4th August 1929 in Khandwa, Central Provinces and Berar British India, Kishore Kumar mesmerised the Indian film industry not only with his brilliant singing but also with his prowess in other departments including lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenplay writer and scriptwriter.

Happy Birthday Kishore Da

He has captivated the audience with his songs in numerous Indian languages including Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Oriya, and Urdu. Who can ever forget the yodelling he introduced in his songs. Is it a wonder then that this eminent singer won 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback singer?

In his prime time, Kishore Kumar has worked with eminent directors and music directors including S.D. Burman, who in fact have been credited with spotting Kishore Kumar’s talent as a singer. Kishore Kumar used to imitate Late K.L. Saigal’s style, however when senior Burman advised him to find his unique style – he started yodelling and the rest they say is a history.

Kishore da, as he is fondly known in the industry, has also acted in numerous movies including Half Ticket, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Padosan to name a few. And his fans still remember the popular song from the movie Padosan – Meri Samne Wali Khidki mein, and of course the memorable duet with Asha Bhonsle – Haal Kaisa Hai Janab ka.
